Paruyr Shahbazyan is an affiliate marketer. What he does is simple. He makes money by driving traffic to online sports betting sites. Basically, his company (called “Bookmaker Ratings”) runs an affiliate marketing business in an industry that is expected to grow to a staggering $6.8 billion by 2020.
While many people scoff at the idea of affiliate marketing, the truth is that it is a sales business like any other except it is better and perhaps slightly easier to do. Bookmaker Ratings makes its money with revenue share deals (for example: 20 - 40% lifetime commissions on net gaming revenues or their referrals), pay per clicks and fixed costs from depositing players. According to Shahbazyan, only revenue sharing will make him over $2 million this year alone.
"We earn bettors' trust by doing two main things: firstly, we help them to solve any bookmaker related issues that may arise and, secondly, we provide unbiased bookmaker ratings," Shahbazyan says. "In Russia, it's hard to find a bettor (that bets regularly) who isn't aware of us."
Shahbazyans’ website is one of the biggest in the industry and he sees himself as a true entrepreneur, enjoying his success and making plans to expand even further into China, EU, UK, Armenia and Ukraine.
Similar to many in the business, Shahbazyan mentions the challenging legal hurdles that come with earning a lot of money: "Right now there are more disadvantages than advantages," he says. "Regulations have become very tight. In July, Russian censoring authorities blocked our site from linking to offshore bookmakers. We were told that we are only allowed to link to sites that have a Russian license. While there are many Russian licensed offline bookmakers, there are only four bookmakers who, at that time, were legally accepting online bets."
His site is registered and classified as a review site which helps in getting around the bookmaker advertising ban on online betting in Russia. Even if it wasn’t, "the fine is not significant," says Shahbazyan, echoing the approach of many of today's entrepreneurs.
Whatever the case might be, Shahbazyan is proof that an affiliate marketing business has the potential to net a huge amount of money. It is good news for us all that his plan was successful despite the highly competitive nature of the sports betting industry.
