About PokerStars

PokerStars is one of the biggest Poker networks online in terms of average player count and one of the pioneering Poker sites that began offering online WSOP (World Series of Poker) qualifiers and thus helped jumpstart the whole online poker boom. Launched in 2001 from Costa Rica by the Scheinberg family, PokerStars grew to become a global force with influence in all major player markets as well as a company known for its Guinness-record-breaking tournament events.

The humble origins of PokerStars began with Isai Scheinberg, a fan of recreational Poker and software engineer who left IBM to pursue an idea of building online Poker software for running big tournaments. With the help of his son Mark, Isai successfully launched his own company and created the software which he hoped to license to other operators. After failing to get a suitable business partner, the Scheinbergs launched the PokerStars Company in 2001 as a vessel to promote the software and by doing so gave birth to the popular online platform.

Thanks to PokerStars’ focus on tournaments and not just cash games, which other sites were specializing in back in those days, the online site began developing pioneering ideas that proved to be very successful. Only a year after its launch, PokerStars introduced the first online qualifiers for the WSOP but also its own WCOOP (World Championship of Online Poker) which became known as the online equivalent of the World Series of Poker. Never one to stop growing, the site kept developing its product range and introduced a number of other successful products in the following years, including more online tournaments, live poker rooms, and tours across the globe, as well as its own online TV channel and branded shows.

One of the most successful products of PokerStars is the Sunday Million tournament - a weekly online poker tour with a guaranteed $1 million in prizes that broke a record for the biggest online tournament by the number of players in 2011. Another record breaker was the successful WCOOP, which in 2011 awarded the biggest online tournament prize at the time, amounting to a staggering $2.2 million. Other popular tournaments from the network are the Scoop (Spring Championship of Online Poker), the Micro Millions, which was designed with micro players in mind, as well as the Zoom Tournaments, which offer fast-paced Poker action.

But tournaments aren't the only reason why the name PokerStars has become so big and omnipresent in the online Poker scene. Namely, like any successful business, PokerStars invested plenty of money and effort into promoting its brand to a worldwide audience. And perhaps the most effective advertising strategy proved to be the network’s partnerships with a wide range of brand ambassadors that were drafted from various walks of life, including some of the most popular sports of today.

One of the most famous partnerships of PokerStars was their agreement with Real Madrid player Cristiano Ronaldo who promoted the brand in televised duels against other celebrities like actor Aaron Paul and even the 2015 Miss World. Other successful athletes that partnered with PokerStars were Barcelona F.C's Neymar, tennis star Rafael Nadal, and former tennis pro Boris Becker. PokerStars also support over a dozen Poker professionals which help to promote the brand through the PokerStars Pro team.

In terms of brand presence, PokerStars' products can be found in almost any major market. The Stars Group – the parent company of PokerStars – has licenses in 17 different jurisdictions, the key being North America and the EU. It is especially active in the European market where it holds separate licenses in Malta, Italy, Spain, Germany, and the United Kingdom, to name a few.

Thanks to PokerStars’ never-ending strive to expand its footing in the global scene, the network has become the number one online spot for both new amateurs and professionals alike. With a bigger combined daily player volume than its competitors 888, MPN, IDN, and PartyPoker, PokerStars is one of the best destinations for online Poker today. Thus far, the network has dealt over 125 billion hands of online poker and its sites have been used by more than 67 million people.

And it's not just online Poker that PokerStars dared to conquer. With the introducing of live poker rooms and live tournaments, the network also gained plenty of exposure in the land-based sector. The network’s European Poker Tour and the Latin American Poker Tour are one of the biggest live events each year. Members of the PokerStars sites can also qualify for the Asia Pacific Tour as well as the popular Caribbean Adventure. And as an affiliate of the brand, you'll also get to enjoy access to coverage and live feeds from all of these popular tours.
